"A coordinated power flow control strategy to enhance the reliability o" by Sohrab Mirsaeidi, Kashem M. Muttaqi et al.

Cascading fault is a newly emerging challenge in hybrid ac/dc grids including current source converters (CSCs) which commences from a dc or a long-lasting severe inverter ac fault and ultimately provokes a total blackout at the inverter ac side. Nevertheless, since the cascading faults emanating from dc faults are not accompanied by commutation failure, the prevailing commutation failure elimination strategies are unable to inhibit these contingencies. To obviate such a challenge, this paper proposes a coordinated power flow control strategy which can preclude the blackouts caused by cascading faults initiated from either dc or inverter ac faults, thereby improving the reliability of hybrid ac/dc power grids. To achieve this, a back-to-back voltage source converter (B2B-VSC) is employed which is responsible for controlling both the inverter ac bus voltage and the active power flow of its connected ac line. This would not only mitigate the probability of commutation failure due to the r ....

"A Modular Magnetic Linked Converter Station for Offshore Power Transfe" by Md Ashib Rahman, Md Rabiul Islam et al.

This paper proposes a modular magnetic linked converter station (CS) for offshore power transfer through a high voltage dc (HVDC) link. The proposed converter station can collect medium voltage ac and dc power simultaneously and transform the power to HVDC suitable for offshore power transmission. The proposed CS adopts multiple half-bridge (HB) converters to form a front-end interface that can collect both medium voltage ac and dc power. Moreover, several high-frequency magnetic linked multiport converters (MLMCs) are employed in the CS to isolate and step up the voltage. The MLMC is operated at a unity step-up voltage ratio which matches the turn ratio in multiple windings shared by a common magnetic link. This condition facilitates minimum current stress on the switches and inherent soft-switching operation. In the proposed CS, the hard switching operation of the front-end HB converters does not affect the switching condition of the MLMCs. Furthermore, the application of the switche ....

"An Introspective Review on Commutation Failure Inhibition Strategies i" by Sohrab Mirsaeidi, Alice Giramata et al.

Line-Commutated Converter High Voltage Direct Current (LCC-HVDC) technology plays an irreplaceable role in power transmission systems due to its thyristor's superior power handling capability and low operating power losses. Nevertheless, one of the main challenges associated with such systems is the high risk of commutation failure caused by inverter AC faults which leads to temporary cessation in transmitted power and severe stress on the converter equipment. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive overview of the available strategies for commutation failure mitigation in LCC-HVDC networks, and then to investigate their mechanism, effectiveness, and limitations. In addition to describing the existing solutions presented to date, and classifying them into specific groups, a comparative analysis has been carried out in which the main merits and demerits of each category are presented. Finally, based on the analyzed technical literature, some insights and future rese ....
