Formerly local Hutch artist and teacher Darren Morawitz is now based in Salina. His studies at Fort Hays State University earned him a BFA in Studio Painting and Art Education. Morawitz taught art classes at Hutchinson High School and at the Hutchinson Art Center.
I met Morawitz back in 2010 during my days of organizing Third Thursday. Morawitz came from Fort Hays to exhibit his paintings at Gallery 7 on Main Street. The paintings were a blend of abstract and realism, a deconstructed view of portraiture. I have two of these works in my collection. ....

Randall: Hutch Art Center features Virgil Penner, Springdale Printmakers

Two exhibitions at the Hutchinson Art Center, 405 N. Washington, open this week. In them, you will find color, whimsy and eye-catching imagery.
Virgil Penner’s paintings are inspired by memories. Growing up on a Kansas farm gave Penner the background of appreciating the landscape. Penner was known for his ink drawings of mostly homes and buildings and later took up acrylic painting after his retirement.
His bright and cheerful use of color reflects the Kansas summer sun, illuminating the Earth and all who are on it. Penner often uses exaggerated perspectives that give the feel of wind on the prairie, which also exposes a playful nature in the work. The bucolic scenes hint at simplicity with a complex story. ....

Jennifer Randall: Hutchinson Art Center permanent collection on display

The Permanent Collection of the Hutchinson Art Center, 405 N. Washington St, is on display now through Jan. 3.
This collection of artwork features prominent local, regional and international artists. There are currently over 400 works of art in the permanent collection because for over 70 years the art collection has grown, thanks to contributions and donations.
While at the Art Center, stop in the gift shop. Every time I go into the gift shop, I have found something unique and creative to purchase. This is the perfect time of year to browse and find a special gift for your list this year. There are paintings, jewelry, cards, fabric art, prints and more and members receive a 10% discount at the gift shop. ....

December Third Thursday celebrates Downtown for the Holidays

Hutchinson’s monthly art, music, and community celebration continues on Dec. 17 with the December Third Thursday: Downtown for the Holidays. This month’s highlights include a livestream of events starting at 6 p.m., as well as the opportunity for the public to pick up a free heart display as a part of “Spread the Love.” Livestream events may be viewed on the Third Thursday Facebook page.
