Dozens of bushfires continue to burn in the region. Earlier, authorities issued the highest level of warning in some areas known as catastrophic for the First Time Since new fire warnings were introduced a decade ago. For more heres the bbcs phil mercer in sydney. Well, we have heard that 850,000 pairs of bushland has been burnt in New South Wales since the start of this years fire season hectares. So that is a huge area of land. Today we have heard that both New South Wales and queensland have declared a state of emergency. What that does, gives the fire authorities greater powers to protect life and property. So that just gives you an indication as to how serious this is. And the day coming is predicted to be the worst since these fires began several weeks ago. Hot temperatures and strong winds in New South Wales are the reason why this threat level is being used in sydney. There are bush fires in queensland too. And we already know how desvtasting these fires can be. These are pictures from the last week. New south wales is already under a state of emergency. That gives the fire Service Special powers to evacuate property and turn off power. Fire crews have come from all over australia and new zealand to help. Protesters plan a second day of disruption after monday saw some of the worst unrest in five months of protests. It left two people in a Critical Condition in hospital. The first person, a protester, was shot by a Police Officer at point blank range. Later, a pro beijing supporter was soaked in flammable liquid and set alight after arguing with protesters.
