Union bargaining brings railway corp a step closer

The legislature’s Transportation Committee yesterday voted nine to five to grant preliminary approval to a draft statute establishing a state-run Taiwan Railway Corp.
The government is proposing transitioning the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) from an agency to a state-run corporation after major express train derailments in 2018 and last year exposed structural problems within the agency that have compromised safety.
The committee considered a version of the draft statute proposed by the Taiwan Railway Labor Union, the largest union in the agency, in addition to the government’s draft. The committee agreed to 16 of the 23 articles in the union’s proposal ....

Animal rights advocates, birds thank lawmakers

Animal rights advocates took parakeets with them for a meeting at the legislature in Taipei yesterday, as they handed awards to lawmakers who are friendly to their cause.
The animal rights advocates were led by National University of Tainan professor of management Wu Chung-hsien (吳宗憲), who said they had brought seven parakeets to show that it is not just cats and dogs, but also many birds that are kept as pets in Taiwan, all needing protection from abuse.

Lawmaker accused of breaching COVID-19 rules

After Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Hung Meng-kai (洪孟楷) was accused of breaking the self-health monitoring requirement by appearing at the legislature yesterday, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said again that people must obey quarantine regulations when returning from abroad.
Hung was among those speaking at the KMT legislative caucus’ morning press conference.
Other lawmakers accused Hung of contravening quarantine regulations, which require people who have returned from overseas to monitor their health and avoid visiting crowded places for seven days after they have completed 14 days of quarantine.
