A protest over post-Brexit rights by French fishermen at Jersey s main port has ended, following talks that aimed to resolve the row.
About 60 boats protested at St Helier and two Royal Navy ships and two French vessels were sent to the area.
French fishermen say their rights are unfairly restricted by licences issued under the Channel Island s new system.
Jersey s External Relations Minister Ian Gorst said discussions were positive .
However, a spokesman for fishermen from France s Normandy region suggested that no progress had been made during the talks. ....

Vessels from Britain s Royal Navy and French police boats patrolled Thursday (local time) near the English Channel island of Jersey, where French fishermen angry about losing access to its waters gathered for a maritime protest.
The irate mariners set off flares and entered the island s main harbour, in the first major dispute between France and Britain over fishing rights in the wake of Brexit.
The European Union appealed for calm, but also accused the UK of not respecting the terms of the post-Brexit trade deal agreed to by the two sides.
The naval policing boats Athos, which has a large machine gun on its front deck, and the unarmed Themis were sent to keep watch on waters between France and Jersey, French maritime authorities for the English Channel and North Sea said. ....

PARIS, May 6 (Reuters) – Britain withdrew its Royal Navy vessels from the waters off Jersey on Thursday but said it would remain on standby to support the Channel island after a dispute with France over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated rapidly.
France and Britain both deployed maritime patrol vessels to the area after a flotilla of French trawlers sailed in protest to Jersey’s main harbor and a French minister suggested earlier in the week that Paris might cut electricity to the island.
French fishermen say they are being unfairly deprived of access to rich fishing grounds off the coast of Jersey, a self-governing British Crown Dependency. ....
