According to recent data from Good Food Institute, a D.C.-based alternative protein research nonprofit, the U.S. plant-based foods market generated $7 billion in retail sales in 2020, growing nearly twice as fast as total food sales. Plant-based meat, a $1.4 billion category, grew by 45 percent in 2020 three times as fast as its animal-based counterpart. Plant-based seafood firm Ocean Hugger Foods – which was forced to pause operations last June as COVID-19 ravaged the foodservice industry (its primary market) – will stage a comeback later this year after forging a joint venture (Ocean Hugger Inc) with Thai food manufacturer Nove Foods. A wholly-owned subsidiary of global manufacturer NRF, Nove Foods has “ multi-continent manufacturing capabilities and sales relationships with many of the world’s largest retailers,” and is “ quickly becoming a major force in the supply of cutting-edge plant-based foods,” said David Benzaquen, co-founder and board member at Ocean Hugger Inc. Share Plant-based seafood analog maker Ocean Hugger Foods, which shut down last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is back via a new partnership with plant-based food manufacturer Nove Foods. Ocean Hugger Foods said last June deteriorating business conditions caused by the coronavirus pandemic forced it to shut down operations. Then, in September, the company said it would relaunch sometime in 2021. Now, Ocean Hugger Foods and Thailand-based food manufacturer Nove Foods Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of NR Instant Produce Public Company Limited (NRF), have formed Ocean Hugger, Inc.
