Know i want to ask, why now? how did these tornadoes get sof strong, and so many of them that cnn s own meteorologist. chad, explain this to us. how does this mayhem break out? it broke out because the storms did not lineup. we heard for years a thing called a squall line. 20 little dogs trying to fight for one bowl of food. they all stay little dogs. well, if you have one bowl of food and one dog eating all the food, he becomes one big dog. this storm over tuscaloosa and eventually near huey town had its own energy, moisture, low pressure here where that pressure was. ....
alone was a mile wide. now, i want to take you back to last night for just a moment. i m going to show you some video that came as close as anything i ve seen to showing what it s actually like when a tornado was coming right at you. just watch and listen. it s not moving side to side. which means it s coming right at us. this house right here! hey, run up to that house. get them to take shelter. turn the car around, joel. i m going to call 911 again. were you able to get through? look at that left edge. that thing is violent. go that way, go that way. keep an eye on it, joel. is that it? that s thunder. no, it just keeps going. is that a roar? that s a roar. debris hit something. you hear that roar? yeah, yeah. it s going to move south of us. get ready to back up. . look at the horizontal vortex, guys. how is this? this is not good, guys. absolutely terrifying footage. and we re going to talk to one of the voices you just heard on ....
Event. literally wind speeds of 200, 225 miles per hour, weather service out there looking to see what that number is. this gives you an idea from the air of what s not left. i mean, sometimes you say, i can see a building there, i can see where that house was, they lost a couple shingles. there s nothing left in the path. you have to understand we re seeing a quarter of a mile of a path. this tornado was on the ground as a very large tornado for 60 miles. so there s damage like this as far as you can see and as far as you can fly that helicopter. now the good news when it left tuscaloosa, but it got to huey town, there was a long distance, 30 miles of empty space, a few houses in between there. but the rural houses good hit as well. people in the northeast can t expect anything like this? we don t have the potential for f-3, f-4, 200 mile tornadoes, no. the weather goes from canada down to jacksonville, and yes, ....
Georgia, just not here just yet. chad, you said we don t know how big and how quickly they move but give us a sense of dimension. how big is that across? do we know? can you tell from that footage and traditionally how big a tornado like that would be? i would say in tuscaloosa and as it moved to the east of there, from a quarter of a mile wide. so that would be three to four city blocks being devastated, knocked down literally. then moving to the east at one half mile wide. that s about how big it was when it got to huey town. a half a mile. almost like a half mile wide bulldozer taking out everything in its path. we just don t have a number on it right now. it s only happened literally an hour ago. i m going to go to the mayor of tuscaloosa in a moment. i just got a couple critical questions. when you give those wind speeds ....
They re harder to see. if you hear anything, if you hear the tornado warning, you need to be inside. the best thing to do is to make sure you have that noaa weather radio and make sure it s on. if it goes off, you need to be in a building. you need to be at the lowest level. basement s best. some houses don t have basements. but you need to be on the lowest level possible. get to know your first floor neighbors if you re in an apartment. be inside a place where there are no windows. sometimes the only living part of a house is that inner structure. and we hope that s where people were. especially in tuscaloosa and huey town. all right, chad, thanks so much for that wise advice, hope folks are listening. joining me now on the phone is walter maddox who s the mayor of tuscaloosa, alabama. his city is right in the path of these monster storms. mayor, thank you for joining us. tell us how bad has it been. what is the sense of the enormity of the damage that s been done? the enormity is ....
