It was a tragedy that led Crystal s mother, Belinda Lane, on a years-long pursuit for her daughter s killers.
As police offered little help after the shooting, Belinda took matters into her own hands.
With the help of her niece, Jaimie McIntyre, Belinda set up a number of fake MySpace accounts in an attempt to chat to members of the 5150 gang, who she believed was responsible for the crime.
One fake profile, Angel , was a fake persona built using Crystal s photos and Jaimie s personality.
By using the Angel profile, Belinda and Jaimie were able to create online relationships with people they suspected of being involved with the murder, based on rumours Justin had heard about the 5150 gang.
In 2006, Crystal Theobald was killed by gang member Julio Heredia. It wasn’t until 10 years later that all the suspects involved would finally be brought to justice for their parts in the crime. New Netflix documentary, Why Did You Kill Me, looks at the case, and how Crystal’s mother, Belinda Lane, used MySpace to track down those responsible.
The Netflix documentary film looks at the case from the very beginning, when 24-year-old Crystal was killed by gang members who mistook the car she was in for one being driven by a rival gang. It’s described that the 5150 gang, which Heredia was a member of, had many in the neighbourhood scared and were known locally as being capable of murder.

The one-off film, which arrived on the streaming site on April 14
th, shows how her mother used the social networking site MySpace to investigate the people she believed were responsible, resulting in reverberations for multiple families.
So, who is Crystal Theobald? And what exactly happened to her?
Here’s everything you need to know.
New Netflix true crime documentary, Why Did You Kill Me, focuses on the 2006 death of Crystal Theobald and her mother’s mission to get justice and find who killed her daughter. After hunting those responsible down on MySpace, it was found that Crystal had been killed by members of local gang the 5150, in a tragic case of mistaken identity.
The 5150 is mentioned a lot throughout the documentary, with pictures of people with the number tattooed across their bodies, videos of them being violent with one another, and then contrasting stories from gang members saying they were a family, and it wasn’t about crime at the beginning.
What lengths would you go to to solve the murder of a loved one? That s the question that Netflix s latest true-crime documentary,
Why Did You Kill Me?, poses as it dives into the case of Crystal Theobald, a 24-year-old woman who was killed in a 2006 gang-related drive-by shooting in Riverside, CA. What differentiates this particular story from others is that Theobald s family took matters into their own hands to track down the people responsible for her murder rather than letting police handle it on their own. Crystal s mother, Belinda Lane, had her 14-year-old niece Jaimie pose as her daughter online by creating multiple fake Myspace profiles. Jaimie would then make the suspects fall in love with her so that she could retrieve as much information from them as possible. Belinda and Jaimie s efforts eventually led to the arrest of Crystal s killers, however, the documentary quite frankly doesn t do enough to address factors that lead young people to seek gang affiliation in the fir
