Reminder, votes on the bill could impact donations of if nra s victory fund. during a news conference, scalise, who is a victim of gun violence himself, shared more of his thoughts on the legislation in response to the uvalde shooting. what we saw, unfortunately, in the minutes and hours after by some people here in washington was a movement to promote their political agenda on the heels of that tragedy. what they were talking about the night of the shooting was trying to get congress to move a bill that had passed the house, a gun control bill, hr-8, that would have had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting. instead of focusing on some fundamental questions that ought to be asked every time there is a tragedy in this country, why did it happen? are there things we can do to prevent it? and i go back to september 11th. because on that tragic day, the country made a clear realization that dots weren t being ....
Last word to you, kris. you have been campaigning on this for a long time. do you feel like we re in a different moment to after parkland or sandy hook? i think we re in a moment where americans are seeing mass gun violence, everyday gun violence and are not feeling safe in our communities. when we have 50,000 americans who have died over the last year since the house passed hr-8, the brady expansion law and the senate hasn t acted, and we have merely 2,400 children killed, people are afraid and they want change. and, yes, it is different. we are hearing from gun owners. we are hearing from americans across the country. they want something to happen. and i think the senators are really feeling that. like all of our viewers watching at home, i do hope and pray that you re right and that this time is different. president of brady, kris brown and ezra levin, indy adviceable, ....
Sometimes if i m in suburban communities who are saying, we have to do something. things have to change. we can t keep living like this. i do think that there actually is a ground swell of folks who are saying we re not just sticking with moving on yet again. you can t look at 19 children slaughtered and look the other way ten days later. i ll stick with you, mayor lucas, you re a member of the u.s. conference of mayors, bipartisan group, you called on the senate a couple of years ago, you called on the senate to pass two gun safety bills passed by the house, hr 8 and hr 1436. you did it by reissuing a letter you sent to the senate in 2019 after the el paso and dayton shootings. it s amazing to me, literally the same language, back then you were talking about 2019 there have been over 250 mass shootings, and now the tulsa shooting on wednesday was the 233rd this year. i mean, you could almost just switch around some of the names of the cities here, and the same thing is happening two ....
Young. anybody who is purchasing a firearm should have to go through a background check. every responsible gun owner that i know has been through a background check. and so this is one of those things everybody talks about hr-8. this is a piece of legislate that s been brought up multiple years. when i was in congress, i was one of eight republicans that voted for that. this is something simple. now, would hr-8 have stopped the uvalde shooting? no. but that s still something we should do. again, i go back to there s s not just one issue that is going to solve all the problems in the future but we need to be talking about has to things that are sensible and reasonable. ....
