Parklets extend dining amid covid pandemic


PROVIDENCE 
Anyone who travels to America s big cities like San Francisco is familiar with parklets. They extend the sidewalk with art installations or sitting areas. They create a pleasing aesthetic element to the streetscape.
It s lovely to see these popping up in Providence, extending outside dining rooms with art, even if they are a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of the state s Take It Outside initiative, The Steel Yard, a nonprofit industrial art center on Sims Street in Providence, has partnered with the city s Department of Art, Culture + Tourism. With grants from Rhode Island Commerce, The Steel Yard is delivering original artwork installations to restaurants and other businesses. ....

Providence ordinance would require owners to track and report energy use


PROVIDENCE If Providence is to cut greenhouse emissions and do its part to avert the worst impacts of climate change, it has to reduce energy use in buildings, which account for 70 percent of the city s carbon footprint.
Mayor Jorge Elorza gathered with members of the City Council and community leaders on Wednesday to announce a first step in addressing the issue: a proposed ordinance that would require owners of large buildings to track how much power they use every year and report it to the city.
The city would make the data publicly available, including efficiency scores for qualifying building types assessed through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency software that buildings would be required to use. The idea behind the program is to drive public awareness about energy use in buildings through transparency, and ultimately push owners to make buildings more energy-efficient. ....
