More than 700 criminal cases have been thrown out and local prosecutors say hundreds more may be tainted after corruption was recently exposed in the Baton Rouge Police Department Narcotics Division.
An officer at the center of the scandal has been arrested twice, four high-ranking narcotics officers have been reassigned to different divisions, and the department is leading a criminal investigation into the drug unit’s possible wrongdoing.
According to WBRZ, the Baton Rouge TV station that broke news of the brewing scandal, narcotics officers planted drugs, made stops without probable cause, and targeted random Black and brown people for trumped-up charges as part of an arrest quota mandated by the division’s supervisors. ....

Alton Sterling (pictured right) was brutally killed by Baton Rouge, Louisiana police over four years ago.
Not a single person was ever held legally accountable in court for killing Sterling, a 37-year-old father. Now the East Baton Rouge Metro Council in Louisiana has voted on a $4.5 million settlement for his family. 
According to ABC, the city council voted 7-4 in favor of the settlement after Sterling’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the municipality and its Baton Rouge Police Department.
“I am pleased our metro council was able to find a consensus and approve an offer of settlement in the Alton Sterling civil case. After nearly five years, the people of Baton Rouge are finally one step closer to getting much-needed closure in this traumatic episode in our history,” Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome said in a statemen ....

The East Baton Rouge Metro Council in Louisiana voted Wednesday night to offer a $4.5 million settlement for the family of Alton Sterling, a Black man shot and killed by police in 2016.
The council voted 7-4 to approve the offer to settle the wrongful death lawsuit brought against the city and the Baton Rouge Police Department.
