HEATWAVE conditions forecasted for Canberra over the next few days won’t ease until Australia Day (January 26), according to the Bureau of Meteorology. 
Temperatures of 37-38C are forecast for Saturday and Sunday (January 23-24), which is close to severe conditions, says meteorologist Dr Helen Kirkup. 
Conditions are expected to worsen on Monday, getting close to extreme conditions with temperatures of 39C. Australia Day will remain hot at 37C before a southerly breeze sees the weather cool down in the afternoon, says Dr Kirkup.
The upcoming hot weather comes with a warning from ACT chief health officer Dr Kerryn Coleman, who is encouraging Canberrans to stay safe by avoiding heat-related stresses and to look out for vulnerable members of the community. ....

Canberra to get heatwave conditions in lead-up to Australia Day
Canberrans and visitors to the national capital are being warned to prepare for heatwave conditions forecast for the ACT this weekend and the increased risk of heat-related stress and illness.
Heatwave conditions are forecast for Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with both high maximum daytime and minimum overnight temperatures expected.
ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman and ACT Ambulance Service Chief Officer Howard Wren have encouraged Canberrans to stay safe by knowing how to avoid heat-related stress.
“It’s important for the community to be aware of the risks associated with prolonged periods of hot weather, in particular those in our community that are more vulnerable,” Dr Coleman said. ....

Warning of snake bites on rise, attacks occurring at Mt Stromlo

PARAMEDICS have already reported to attending a number of snake bite victims that have coincided with a rise of incidences across the bush capital this summer. 
Canberrans are being urged to take the necessary precautions before an ambulance arrives following high snake activity at Mt Stromlo in recent weeks.
ACT ambulance service chief officer Howard Wren said the victims on the popular hiking and mountain-biking trials called 000 immediately and correct treatment was applied that ensured their lives were not at risk.
“Venom can be fatal if left untreated,” Mr Wren said. ....
