Vaccines ramping up rapidly What happened Hopes that the end of the pandemic is in sight rose this week, as President Biden announced that the U.S. will have enough coronavirus vaccine âfor every adult in America by the end of Mayââtwo months sooner than previously projected. With tens of millions of new doses due to arrive in coming weeks, the president said, the federal government will make immunizing all teachers by the end of March a priority. Biden accelerated his vaccine timeline after the FDA gave emergency authorization to a third Covid-19 vaccine: a single-shot regimen from Johnson & Johnson, which shipped 3.9 million doses this week. With help from the administration in obtaining supplies and logistics, Johnson & Johnson will make vaccines around the clock, and plans to produce 94 million doses by June. To speed production, the White House brokered a historic deal for pharmaceutical giant Merck to dedicate two of its facilities to making the vaccin ....

Maryland and South Carolina reported five cases of the South Africa variant, or B.1.351, which has overwhelmed South Africa and spread to at least 32 countriesâand appears to be reinfecting people previously sickened with Covid. The B.1.1.7 strain, or U.K. variantâwhich spreads up to 70 percent more easily than earlier strains and may be 30 percent more lethalâhas been detected in at least 30 states.
