This weekend, people were walking in and out of Dallas Borjas Cocina Mexicana restaurant like North Texas hadn’t gone through an unrelenting deep freeze last week except these weren’t regular customers. Instead, the people were volunteers and organizers who are trying to provide food, supplies and shelter to North Texas communities hit hard by last week s storms. A coalition of Black and brown-led organizations, headed by Feed The People Dallas, is behind the effort. ....

ALEC Working in Partnership with Turning Point USA, Major Player in Capitol Insurrection

The American Legislative Exchange Council entered into a new partnership last month with a radical-right pro-Trump group, Turning Point USA, that played a major role in promoting Trump s lies about voter fraud and organizing the Jan. 6 rally aimed at overturning the presidential election, documents obtained by the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) reveal.
While the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) released a statement on the day of the riot saying that it condemns the lawless, extreme behavior of protestors attempting to block Congressional certification of electoral college votes, it failed to disclose that its partner Turning Point USA (TPUSA) helped organize the #StoptheSteal protest that turned into a deadly insurrection at the Capitol. ....

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) reports that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S., with an average of 132 deaths by suicides each day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is especially important to be aware of ways to safeguard mental health.

Last year 21-year-old Kelsey Schinker moved out of her dad’s house and into a group home for people with intellectual disabilities. This was her first time managing her small monthly allowance, and she accidentally overdrew her checking account.
Schinker’s banker, Jim Zimmerman at Shelby County State Bank in Harlan, waived the fee since this was Schinker’s first overdraft. He recommended that she review her bank transactions regularly online, but she didn’t have a way to do so. Zimmerman helped her apply for an Embrace Iowa grant so she could buy an iPad and track her finances. ....
