Racial equity task force NC: North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice releases report

RALEIGH (WTVD) The North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice released their report Monday afternoon, outlining 125 solutions to address strengthening community and law enforcement ties and disparities in the courtroom.
North Carolina has a tragic legacy of slavery, segregation and racist violence that still affects our state and people to this day, said Attorney General Josh Stein, who co-chaired the Task Force.
The 23-member Task Force was formed by Governor Cooper in June following the officer-involved deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
We can t talk about racial equity in the criminal justice system without discussing use of force. It s what sparked this Task Force into existence. We recommend that law enforcement agencies ban the use of neck holds. That they develop policies to require officers to intervene when they see another officer use excessive force, said Stein. ....

N.C. racial justice task force makes dozens of recommendations
RALEIGH (AP) A task force commissioned by North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper in the days following George Floyd’s death on Monday formally recommended far-reaching changes to police, criminal justice and court systems, with a goal of eliminating racial inequities.
“This task force took the governor’s charge seriously and worked to develop recommendations that will make North Carolina a safer place for every person no matter who you are,” said Attorney General Josh Stein, who co-led the panel with Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls.
The final report from the North Carolina Task Force for Racial Equity in Criminal Justice urges more vigorous formal police standards involving the use of force, more education of officers on racial bias, and more transparency about officer misconduct. Routine psychological evaluations of officers should also be required, according to panelists. ....
