School Choice Bill Passes in Missouri

The Missouri House of Representatives passed Missouri HB349, a school choice bill that provides tuition scholarships through a tax credit. The Bill now heads to Governor Mike Parson for him to sign it into law.
Under the bill, Missouri taxpayers can donate as much as 50% of their tax liability to eligible non-profit scholarship organizations. The donors receive a 100% tax credit for their donation, and the non-profits then award the money to students through ESAs (Education Savings Accounts). In total, $6,375 can go to eligible students for education-related expenses in a public, charter, virtual, private, or home school. ....

Riggs leads charge toward broadband expansion

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. â Rep. Louis Riggs has taken the next step toward addressing the critical shortage of broadband access to rural Missourians with a letter to Gov. Mike Parson, Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, requesting $250 million in matching federal funds.
Broadband-specific funds are expected in the future, but Riggs said the letter requests the specific amount as matching funds federal money from all sources. Speaker of the House Rob Vescovo set up a budget committee for possible allocations as money becomes from the federal government, and Riggs has talked with Rep. Doug Richey about what opportunities exist to best expand Internet access and complete the critical âlast mileâ broadband connection to homes. ....
