Two thirds of hospitality leaders (66%) say they expect better-than-average summer if restrictions still enable them to have sufficient numbers of covers, Lumina Intelligence’s latest Hospitality Leaders Poll has found. By contracts, only 8% of those polled thought they would experience a poor summer. Almost a quarter of respondents (24%) have reported a significant uptick in bookings since the confirmation of the reopening of indoor trade from 17 May while 34% say they have sio far seen no difference. ....
Rising costs of ingredients and increased overheads has forced hospitality businesses to increase their menu prices, Lumina Intelligence’s Hospitality Leaders Poll reveals. The survey of business leaders across the pub, restaurant and QSR sectors found that nearly half of respondents to the poll (48%) report having have had to raise their prices since reopening in order to safeguard the future of their businesses. Average spend on eating and drinking out fell last month, according to Lumina, with spend falling 12% to £8.30, according to its Eating and Drinking Out Panel. Hospitality businesses have also reported have experienced some sort of supply issue since outdoor trading resumed, with nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents having struggled with supplies since reopening on 12 April. ....

More than a third of operators (36%) have described their opening weeks of outdoor trading as a “decent start” with 22% saying it has been “excellent” since outside trading was permitted in England from 12 April Only 9% of respondents reported only marginal takings, while 33% of respondents have not been able to reopen yet. Peach pub company is one such business that has reported strong trading following reopening on 12 April. It reports sales of £725,000 and £690,000 in weeks one and two across all of its of all of its 19 pubs for outside only, including the town centre ones. ....
The Hospitality Leaders Poll, conducted by Lumina Intelligence, on behalf of The Morning Advertiser, MCA, Big Hospitality and Restaurant, included 191 operators, of which, over a third (34%) said they had not reopened yet. What’s more, less than a quarter of those surveyed (23%) said their business has been very poor and ‘barely worth reopening’ for since rules were eased on Monday 12 April in England to permit outdoor trade. Less than one-in-10 of those surveyed (9%) mentioned being very busy and experiencing an ‘extremely encouraging start’, while just over two-in-five respondents (43%) said they had been ‘busy, with some moderate level of trade’. Overall, some 43% of those asked reported some level of busy trade. ....
