DNA, Camera Footage Led to Teen's Arrest in Killing of Carlsbad Hiker

For three weeks, there were no answers as to who had killed the grandmother.
On Dec. 14, the teenage suspect was arrested at a beach in Carlsbad in connection to Thorborg’s killing. At his arraignment last week, he denied all allegations.
Police arrested a 17-year-old Carlsbad resident in connection with the deadly stabbing of a woman on a popular hiking trail. NBC 7 s Alexis Rivas has more.
Tuesday s hearing revealed some of the preliminary facts that led Carlsbad police to arrest the boy, who still faces the possibility of being charged as an adult.

The Killing of Lisa Thorborg
Thorborg was a beloved grandmother who had moved to Carlsbad with her family just 6 months ago.
On the morning of Nov. 23, Carlsbad Police Department detectives believe Thorborg went hiking alone on a trail that runs through Hosp Grove Park – just blocks away from her home.
Investigators said Thorborg had posted some messages on social media in the days leading up to her killing asking if there was anyone around who wanted to go hiking with her.
“Hiking anyone?” she posted on NextDoor, a social media site that connects neighbors. “I would love the company.”
The Carlsbad Police Department is still investigating those posts and whether they had anything to do with Thorborg’s killing. ....

“I would keep looking it up on my phone to see if they found out anything on what happened with that lady,” said Carlsbad mother Julie Capps.
She knew about Monday’s arrest before NBC 7 could ask.
“My husband saw it on the news and told me about it,” said Capps.
The Carlsbad Police Department arrested the murder suspect, a 17-year-old Carlsbad resident, on a city beach on Monday.
“It’s painful,” said Capps. “It’s painful. I have a son who’s 18 and he might know this boy. We might know this family.” ....

CARLSBAD, Calif. A teenager was arrested in connection with the late-November murder of a California woman who was stabbed to death while hiking along a San Diego-area trail, Carlsbad Police Department recently announced.
The 17-year-old, whose age prevented authorities from releasing his name, was arrested Monday for the murder of Lisa Thorborg, a 68-year-old Carlsbad woman, local police officials announced in a press release. The suspect is a resident of Carlsbad, KTLA reported.

Thorborg is believed to have been jogging or walking along a hiking trail within Hosp Grove Park when she was stabbed on the morning of Nov. 23. A passerby discovered her body and called police at 11:23 a.m., “when they noticed a woman lying on the trail,” police said. ....
