By Douglas Rooks Share There have been many tributes to outdoorsman George Smith, who died Feb. 12 at age 72 from ALS, a disease that he bore with remarkable fortitude and courage over the last four years of his life. Perhaps there’s room for one more. Smith was best known as executive director of the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine, which he led for two decades and essentially created as a force to be reckoned with. ....

OK, I know the new year is two days away, but I’ve had it with 2020. From the nasty presidential and U.S. Senate races to the pandemic’s isolation at home, 2020 was a year we’ll want to forget. I hope you’ve got a good wish list for 2021. Mine starts with the end of the pandemic, but I’m afraid that’s going to take all year. I really miss visits from my friends, the opportunity to enter stores in my wheelchair while my wife Linda shops, and attending church in person to share time with friends (our church services are Zoomed now). ....
George Smith: History lives on through the buildings around us Maine has done a terrific job protecting and preserving its landmarks. By George Smith Share I really appreciate that we have done so much in Maine to protect and preserve our historic buildings. For example, the beautiful lighthouse in Lubec still stands, thanks to a friends group, and they turned the house into a museum. My great grandfather was the lighthouse keeper for 30 years in the early 1900s, and there’s a photo of my great grandparents in the museum. There’s also a photo of my mom when she was a kid, growing up just down the road, and a memorial to my cousin David, who worked at the lighthouse until his death at the age of 48. ....
