The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on the Hoover Recreation Center, cutting its membership levels in half, according to city records.
The number of memberships at the Rec Center dropped 58% from 7,608 in February 2020 to 3,177 in February 2021. The number of memberships climbed back up slightly to 3,528 in April, but that’s still a far cry from the numbers before the pandemic hit.
“I think everybody’s just nervous about coming back,” Hoover Parks and Recreation Director Craig Moss said.
The Rec Center was closed for about 70 days in the spring of 2020 due to state health orders, but even after it reopened, there were numerous restrictions in place regarding capacity levels and social distancing. ....

In an ideal vaccine rollout, Althea Darby would have been able to schedule a COVID-19 immunization appointment quickly and effortlessly.
The South Los Angeles resident has high blood pressure, which puts her at increased risk for serious illness if she catches the coronavirus, and she is 69, part of an age group that has been eligible for vaccination for three weeks in L.A. County.
But Darby endured an odyssey to get her COVID-19 shot.
“I had two phones going at the same time,” she said of her experience calling the county’s vaccination number last week. “I was on the line for at least six to eight hours nothing.” ....

Hoover hires Alabama Power for $9.4 million in energy upgrades

An employee for Monroe Electric Co. works on the lights at Shades Mountain Park in Hoover, Alabama, on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021. The city has hired Alabama Power to upgrade the lighting system at Shades Mountain Park and many other facilities across the city in 2021.
The Hoover City Council has agreed to hire Alabama Power to do $9.4 million worth of upgrades to the city’s energy and utility systems.
However, the upgrades won’t cost the city any money, Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato said. “This is not costing us a dime,” Brocato said. ....
