February 8, 2021 at 3:45pm Planned coffee shop and restaurant The Freshman, at 2011 Crystal Drive in Crystal City, could open in a few months after being in the works for a little over two years. Owner Nick Freshman told ARLnow that he’s looking at opening The Freshman sometime in April or May, though no date is set in stone yet. A limited version of the restaurant had opened as a pop-up in Crystal City Shops in 2019 and all the signs of an impending opening were in place last year, but a plan to ride out the pandemic has been less feasible as the virus’s impacts continue to drag on. Freshman, who also owns Clarendon bar Spider Kelly’s, said he remains optimistic about a turn-around ahead. ....
First started in March 2020 in response to the pandemic, the program provides meal kits to those in the local hospitality industry impacted by layoffs, hours reductions, mandatory shutdowns, and capacity restrictions. In addition to its original D.C. location, the program will also now distribute kits from The Freshman, the yet-to-open cafe at 2011 Crystal Drive. “Northwest D.C. is not the easiest place to get to for everyone,” Hook Hall Helps founder Anna Valero, who also owns the bar and event space Hook Hall, tells ARLnow. “What was important to us in choosing to expand to another location was accessibility. The hope is being able to provide and meet people more where they are.” ....

Hook Hall owner Anna Valero will dispense free meals and supply kits from her Park View bar and beer garden to anyone in need on Mondays from 3 to 5 PM (as well as on Christmas Eve). Valero launched Hook Hall Helps in March after having to furlough 75 employees herself when the pandemic forced DC-area businesses to close. Working with a skeleton crew of nine employees and volunteers, they connected with restaurant-supply companies to get toilet paper and cleaning products; organized chef-volunteers to make 500-plus meals a week from food donations; and teamed up with the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington to establish a citywide Worker Relief Fund, which has raised more than $675,000 to date.
