Hong Jang-pyo, architect of the Moon Jae-in administration s income-led growth policy, was sworn into office as president of the Korea Development Institute (KDI) earlier this week, according to the institute, Wednesday.
He succeeds Choi Jeong-pyo for a three-year term.
Hong emphasized the distribution of wealth during a ceremony for his appointment at the state-run institute in Sejong, stressing the importance of inclusive growth characterized by cycles of growth and distribution in the post-COVID-19 era. ....

A progressive group of economists on whose theories the Moon Jae-in administration based its economic policies have turned into harsh critics of the government. Their focus is equitable distribution of wealth rather than solely pursuing economic growth, but in a seminar last week, they attacked Moon s failed attempt to stimulate private spending by hiking the minimum wage and to tame rising apartment prices by slapping punitive taxes on multiple home owners. They said Moon s policy gambles created many problems and led to lost credibility. They also accused the president of being a populist by bypassing feasibility studies in the construction of a new airport on Gadeok Island near Busan to buy votes in Korea s second city, and banning the Tada ride-hailing app due to opposition from the taxi-driver lobby.
