Centre asks states to re-open poultry shops; animal welfare groups insist on not lowering guard | India News


NEW DELHI: Acting on demand of poultry sector, the Centre has written to states asking them to allow opening of poultry shops with appropriate Covid guidelines during the current lockdown period even as animal welfare groups insisted on not lowering the guards at a time when the move has potential to increase risk during the pandemic.
“I would request you to issue direction to the local administration to open the poultry shop, if not possible for entire period of time but for a particular duration, as considered appropriate following the Covid appropriate guidelines,” said Atul Chaturvedi, secretary, ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry & dairying, in his letter to chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories (UTs). ....

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to your Lordships as many of you have practiced in different courts across the country and have been a part of various High Courts as Hon’ble Judges and even Chief Justices. You have been a part of not only the judicial framework but also a part of the culture of the States wherein you resided during such tenure. And there is no doubt that with every High Court, you have dispensed justice as if it was your parent High Court and the people, your own. ....

This present crisis, a manmade disaster by all accounts, if nothing else, has brought one of our hidden talents to the fore,our proclivity to slam stable doors well after the horses have bolted.The awakening from deep self- induced slumber of our politicians, bureaucrats and even the Hon’ble Courts is palpable as the crisis seems to have finally caught their attention. As some would still say, better late than never! ....
