Brotherhood was largely a homogeneous, largely secular group that issued violence. and of course, they went on to gain control of egypt and put the entire nation in flames and thousands of people died. that s one of a list that people have, you know, noticed over the course of director clapper s tenure. he also told diane sawyer back in 2010 he wasn t aware of a round-up that was on the front of the newspapers at the time. he also said he thought russia and china presented the greatest threat to the united states raising a lot of questions about where he might place iran on that list. is it the cumulative effect that concerns all of you? or is it really down to this nsa issue and a belief that he may have misled or lied in that testimony? well, you know, i think one of the greatest things that concern me most is the fact that this administration as a general rule seems to default towards deceiving the congress. ....
You can t will yourself to be good at it. you have to put in the time. the chance of finding something magical and amazing is it s like treasure hunting, like martha cooper puts it, treasure hunting. go ahead. in terms of the treasure hunting piece, one of the things about the film, it s as much about these photographers as it is a story of new york city. as someone who lives here, the thing that struck me was, the city doesn t seem as interesting as it used to, in terms of characters and ways of living. as new york city has gotten richer, more homogeneous, street life less. do you feel someone who shoots in 2013, do you reminisce and wish for the days of old? i do but i don t i think it s still there. ....
It feels to me on the question of diversity. on the one hand i look at colors of magazines we have, except for karen washington on the glamour, there isn t a woman of color, particularly september issues around fashion week. yet if i start flipping through, it feels like on the pages in print there is some diversity. but the runways, extraordinarily homogeneous. what s the difference between the runway, what is the role the runway plays? the role the runway plays is to get the ideas, fantasy, marketing out. you get women to buy and to dream and fantasize about being these girls on the runway. when we see fashion shows as people of color, i think we tend to look for someone we can identify with. if we don t see it, we re almost feel as though we re forgotten in that sense that we don t buy clothes, we re not interested in fashion. ....
You might think. there s also rural pockets of this country where the communities themselves are ho homogeneous. also on geography but age plays a roll. 42% of americans ages 30 and up report not having any friends of a different race. that falls to 30% for americans ages 18 to 29. why do you think that is? i think there are two factors there. number one, the young people under 30 tend to be more social. they socialize in different settings. they are in university, early in their careers. they are spending more times at restaurants and bars. as you get older you tend to socialize more within the confines of where you live an where you work. ....
Need neighborhoods and communities integrated. i m thinking part of what makes that difficult, if you are the white parent of a black or mixed race child, you may also be living in a neighborhood that is homogeneous, only have schools available to you that are pretty homogeneous. for me personally, i was able to be raised in an integrated neighborhood but it was in the 50s. so the low in come white people in my neighborhood were mixed in with college educated african-american families because they weren t allowed to buy a house anywhere else. my exposure came to be with educated african-american families and their kids and we all grew up together, went to grade school and high school together. so for me the racial education came from growing up and living together. so the fair housing movement and congress, when they passed it, one of the goals is to promote residential integration. coming from that background, i recognize how we learn about ....
