How China is fuelling tensions between Australia and New Zealand

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is asserting New Zealand’s “sovereignty” in defiance of its foreign allies - comprising Australia, Canada, the UK and the US - by signalling that she is “not prepared to take her country into the kind of trade war with China that Australia has found itself facing”, The Guardian’s diplomatic editor Patrick Wintour reports.
Uneasy alliance
A simmering row between Australia and New Zealand bubbled over last week after Ardern’s foreign minister, Nanaia Mahuta, told a press conference that her country needs to “maintain and respect” China’s “particular customs, traditions and values”.
The intervention came amid ongoing tension between Canberra and Beijing over the sovereignty of Taiwan, with Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton telling ABC’s Insiders on Sunday that he did not think conflict with China “should be discounted”.  ....

Value of Australian wine exports to China falls 96% amid rising tensions

“Some claim that the problems in bilateral trade ties resulted from China’s economic coercion against Australia. What a ridiculous and irrelevant argument,” he said at the Australia China Business Council briefing. “As the old saying goes, whoever tied the knot is responsible for untying it.”
China’s retaliatory strikes across A$20 billion ($21.4b) in exports have hit local wine producers among the hardest of any industry. Coal, barley and wood have largely been able to diversify into other markets, but winemakers have seen the value of their exports to China fall from A$325 million between December 2019 and March last year to A$12 million during the same period this year. ....

War with China “may be inevitable” and those in positions of power are finally “being honest” about the threat posed by the superpower, according to Sky News host Rita Panahi.
Home Affairs Secretary Michael Pezzullo recently stated we should “get ready to fight for our liberty” and prepare to send “our warriors to fight”.
“Defence Minister Peter Dutton also admitted on Sunday that Australia cannot discount conflict with China over Taiwan,” Ms Panahi said.
“Australia must also be prepared to offer asylum to those fleeing Hong Kong, and perhaps Taiwan as well, if China’s aggression intensifies.” ....

Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy says Home Affairs Secretary Michael Pezzullo is right to send the “wakeup call” to complacent Australians by warning the “drums of war” are beating.
