Eagle River water levels rise above average flow

Streamflows on the local Eagle River have certainly seen a spike the past few days thanks to the recent rain.
According to the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District, the Eagle River is experiencing flows 170% higher than normal near Minturn and 144% higher than normal in Avon. This is quite the difference from just four days ago, July 29, when the river level was 49% of the average streamflow for this time of year in Avon.
According to Diane Johnson, the communications and public affairs manager for the Eagle River Water and Sanitation District, there have only been seven days since April 1 where the river levels have exceeded the average. ....

Recent rain has no impact on county drought conditions

Despite the recent onset of rain in Eagle County, drought conditions remain at historic levels, ranging from severe to exceptional across the region.
Eagle County, along with almost all of Western Colorado, has been experiencing this drought cycle for over a year now. And conditions across the Western Slope remain dry enough that late last week, Gov. Jared Polis declared a drought emergency for 21 Western Colorado counties
, including Eagle County.
According to Becky Bolinger, the assistant state climatologist at the Colorado Climate Center, these conditions became severe late last summer and early fall due to a lack of monsoon moisture, no precipitation and very hot temperatures. And then, conditions spiraled from there. ....

2021 highway cleanup nets 10 tons more than 5-year average

The numbers don’t lie; skipping a year of the highway cleanup results in twice as much trash the following year.
The Eagle River Watershed Council shared their 2021 Community Pride Highway Cleanup numbers with the Vail Daily on Monday, along with the numbers from other recent years.
Before this year, the last five highway cleanups had yielded, on average, about 12 tons of trash per year.
This year, volunteers collected 22 tons of trash after the 2020 cleanup was canceled due to COVID-19.
That number sounded all too predictable, said Holly Loff with the Eagle River Watershed Council.
“I’ve said, for years, that the average amount of trash that gets put down on our highways in an average year is about 10 to 12 tons,” Loff said. “So the fact that we didn’t do it last year, and there’s about 22 tons, tells me that’s about right.” ....

1,000 volunteers spend Saturday cleaning up trash from Vail-area highways

About 1,000 volunteers turned out to clean the highways of Eagle County on Saturday in the Eagle River Watershed Council’s Community Pride Highway Cleanup.
It’s an annual event, but last year was canceled amid the uncertainty of the coronavirus, and the trash continued accumulating.
This year, Holly Loff with the Watershed Council was able to participate in her first highway cleanup, as she’s usually busy organizing the after-party. Loff said she had people approaching her in the grocery store, asking when and if the cleanup was taking place. ....

Eagle County Gives Day collects $1.5M

Correction: The Vail Valley Foundation’s Black Diamond Ball hasn’t been cancelled, but taken on line. It’s the Star Dancing Gala that raises $1 million in just one night.
It’s been a tough year for everyone. Colorado Gives Day, and its local offshoot, Eagle County Gives Day, provided a day of good feelings on Tuesday.
The annual 24-hour day of online giving exceeded last year’s donation total by roughly 50%. The 2019 donation total was roughly $1.03 million. This year’s donations surpassed $1.5 million.
About 50 local nonprofit groups have coordinated their efforts for Eagle County Gives Day.
Brooke Skjonsby, director of the Vail Valley Charitable Fund, is also president of the Eagle County Gives Day board. Looking at this year’s donations brought her to tears on Wednesday. ....
