Freischtot shows us the problem. we are sitting in the middle of a food desert. a food desert being an area where there are no supermarkets or access to healthy food. reporter: the options are scarce. corner markets selling mostly processed food at high prices. if you drove around this neighborhood, you d see all fast food. reporter: neighbors want to change that. and many came to this health fair at the local elementary school. if you don t drive you are basically not able to eat. it s a grim reality of how we have to live out here. reporter: while grocery stores may be scarce there are farmer s markets within walking distance of some of these so-called food desert neighborhoods. the problem is some people on the food stamp program can t buy fresh fruits and vegetables here. right now if you come to the farmer s market you have to have cash on hand but in order to be able to get low-income people to come and use their food stamps you need this particular machine. yes. ....
