As spring approaches, the time of year when high school seniors wrap up their year in celebration with prom and graduation nears.
Some local school district officials have prepared to host these end-of-year events on schedule, though precautions will be in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
For Altoona Area High School, “plans are underway” for prom, according to district Community Relations Director Paula Foreman. The high school’s outdoor graduation is scheduled for June 11 at Mansion Park Stadium. The Pennsylvania Department of Education’s annual Safe Schools report for the 2019-20 school year showed a noticeable drop in reported arrests.
Districts are required to submit their misconduct reports, both criminal and academic infractions, to the state every year. Reporting sometimes changes from year-to-year, but no changes were made last school year.
Last year, the top three criminal reasons why students were in trouble statewide were:
Possession, use, or sale of tobacco or vaping 8.34 percent
Fighting 8.14 percent
Minor altercation 5.42 percent

Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School students will return to classrooms today after two days of virtual learning because of a shortage of teachers.
Fourteen employees were quarantined because they had come into contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19.
Superintendent Robert Gildea announced the staff exposure in a letter to parents Saturday, stating that “COVID continues to be among us.”
In the letter, Gildea expressed his frustration with the high school’s ongoing difficulties as a result of COVID-19.
“It has become impossible to provide adequate supervision of our students, let alone maintain effective instruction,” Gildea said. The recent staff shortage marked the second roadblock for the high school since students returned Jan. 19. ....
