Yaas leaves behind Tk 60 crore worth of damage, losses in Khulna

Bangladesh, May 31 The local administration has estimated a loss of Tk 60 crore in damage caused by Cyclone Yaas in the coastal areas of Khulna district.
Due to the impact of the cyclone, many houses, fish enclosures, some 100 kilometres of embankments and crop lands were damaged.

The experts have estimated that the combined damage is worth up to Tk 60 crore.
In Koyra upazila, 50 villages under four unions of the district have been flooded by the river water while the tidal surge entered the localities through 11 points of the flood-protection embankment as the water levelof Kapotakkho, Koyra and Shakbaria rivers increased 6-7 feet above the normal level. ....

Motorcycle accident leaves cousins dead in Munshiganj

Two cousins, on an unregistered motorcycle, were killed at Muktarpur Bridge in Sadar upazila of Munshiganj this afternoon when the two-wheeler hit a footpath.
The deceased were identified as Md Shayor (20), from Ponchoboti area of Fatulla in Narayanganj, and his paternal cousin Omi (21) from VT Hogla area of Munshiganj Sadar upazila. Shayor was a student of Dhaka s Uttara College and Omi studied at Government Haraganga College.
Munshiganj Sadar Traffic Police Inspector Mohammad Bazlur Rahman said two youths were coming towards Munshiganj on an unregistered motorcycle from Ponchoboti. Due to speeding, they lost control and hit a footpath at Muktarpur Bridge. ....

Tilman Henckell [Judge and Magistrate of Jessore] at an early period of his magistracy, turned his attention to the Sundarbans, and he was the founder of the system of reclamation which is now converting these great forests into immense rice tracts. The route from the eastern districts to Calcutta passed at that time by nearly the same river-courses which it follows now by Kochua, Khulna, Chandkhali, and by the river leading past Kaliganj. But this route was then south of the cultivated tracts, and for the most part lay through forest, no habitations being on either side. Cultivation had in some places been carried farther south for example, in the pergunnahs of Hogla and Chirulia; but the above description for the most part held good. ....
