ar train per day they tell us. but it s coming into the hoboken station, which is the terminal stop or final stop of this train. they come right in off this line and head to a bumper in the final yard here right on the hudson river. i have a better picture of it over here to show you. it s coming off these tracks. so many of them, each one of these is a separate train. hundreds and hundreds of them from new jersey transit and each of these is a docking station, track one, two, three. with track five where this happened. the train should have been coming and coming in at 5 miles an hour and by then people would all be standing holding on to the rails because in new york and new jersey you don t wait to get up when it stops, you make a line and prepare to file out and that s what had happened and this train never shroud down. it came from all witness accounts including people as they arrive at full speed and instead of hitting the bumper here at the end, this is the terminal, t
concrete, dust and electrical wires and a train flying into the depo. i couldn t believe what i was seeing. rick was among the first reporters on the scene. he joins us live with the latest. john, new jersey trandzit is one of the largest transportation system and this hoboken terminal one of the busiest stations and 15000 people boarding trains. it was transit 1614 out of spring valley, new york. it left 7:20 and arrived at 8:45 with estimated 250 people on board. it came in way too fast near top speed and crashed over bumper and into a concrete wall. some say it flew 40 feet in the air smashing in the ceiling. the front car heavily damaged. many passengers were on the front two cars, waiting and standing to get off of the train and they were thrown about. 100 injuries many of them critical. one confirmed fatality, a woman standing on the subway platform waiting for the train to come in hit by flying debreechlt the port authority emergency service unit extraicated two pe
he says the very first train car was just demolished. the ntsb says it s gathering information, trying to determine what happened before it decides whether or not to launch its own investigation. let s get right back to cnn s brynn gingras to fill us in on what we know right now. again, 100 people injured, that s a lot of people. with this train that we know just crumbled. at this point we know there are a lot of agencies lending aid at this point. the federal railroad agency, ntsb, local law enforcement, local paramedics. we know a number of ambulances were sent to the scene to transport any of these injured people to hospitals. we can see there was a triage center set up right outside of that train station. we know many train stations or that train station, rather, is shut down and train service is certainly affected for people trying to get into the city or commute, rather, at this time in the morning. we also know there is structural damage so at this point urban and re
doct those catching most of the wounded. good news is upwards of 40 of them have walked into the er. they came in originally by bus. that means their injuries though injuries are injuries are on the minor side. we have several people in the er and undergoing critical care. but you see the scenes of damage on the right. and you see, frankly, the typography, the area that says waiting room and two trains. the hoboken train station looks like what it is. it s from another era. it s from the golden era of train travel along the east coast of the united states. it s one of those train stations where the guts and wiring have been slowly updated over the years. but the bones remain the same. not unlike grand central terminal here in new york city. it is part of an aging, rapid area transit here in new york and elsewhere. look to the bottom, that s an old pier, long since burned off and the remnants are visible from the air right through the murky water of the hudson river. it s
