Tis the season to get rid of those potholes. Wayne County and the Michigan Department of Transportation are both doing major road projects in Westland this summer. The city plans to clean up a few roads, as well. Here s what drivers can expect: Newburgh, Cherry Hill intersection City council recently approved a contract with MDOT allowing the state department to repair about two miles of the busy road. Work will start on Newburgh at the intersection with Cherry Hill Road and move north, going about 400 feet past Newburgh s intersection with Ford Road. Work will include milling the existing asphalt and resurfacing the road as well as making repairs to curbs and ADA ramps. The project costs $1,477,175, and Westland will pay $268,108 of that. MDOT will fund the remaining cost. ....
Westland is dealing with another lawsuit alleging poor police conduct. Bernard Culver, a deaf man, was in a 2018 car wreck that he details in a complaint filed last week in U.S. District Court. He is demanding a jury trial and damages because, no matter how many times he pointed at a printed “I Am Deaf or Hard of Hearing” card, police apparently failed to call for a sign language interpreter or other aids and services so he could tell his side of the story, the lawsuit states. Culver’s complaint alleges violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Michigan Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act. ....
