some stronger storms. parts of the midwest, up towards the great lakes, and another day as we get into tomorrow for the plains states for a lot of the areas that were hit hard last night with the tornado reports. we re getting into this active season. two big severe seasons, the spring and the fall when we transition into the wintertime and then the summertime and that s when we typically see the severe storms and a big winter storm, a really early winter storm for the rockies and parts of the northwest. winter storm warnings are in place for all of these areas. so some of these regions could get two feet of snow in the mountains and we could see some snow across the lower elevations as well. so that s a pretty big deal, especially for this time of year. they do see snow typically in october but to see this amount in the pretty short period of time across the mountains, that s pretty epic. todd: even in the grand can von. absolutely, some snow across the grand canyon. we ll keep you
. welcome back, everybody. we want to get right to the winter storm hitting the nth east. a state of emergency in effect for parts of new york, and boston, has closed off public schools for today, bill karins is back with us, still snowing in parts of the country right now. it is like seven days on this storm. and we got hit hard last night. and delivered. got nailed. in new york, it finally stopped snowing. snow totals three straight days on and off. and this is about 45 minutes due west of albany, new york. 28 inches of snow. and albany, new york city, 19 inches of snow. the sixth biggest snowstorm on record, back to the 1800s. hartford connecticut, the airport reporting 14 inches of snow. and boston is at three inches.
1989. they do not want to have to rebuild that again. as far as evacuation orders, all of the low-lying areas of south carolina are under evacuation orders now. it does seem that quite a few people have heeded warnings and taken higher ground. so hopefully if that storm surge comes, it will have minimal impact on human life. alex? blake mckay, stay safe. looks prove. thank you very much. meteorologist bill karins has been following the path of the storm. let s talk about georgia and south carolina. what should folks be prepared for? weather s improving in savannah. that was hit hard last night. second highest water levels ever during the singurge. hilton head, 90 mile-per-hour gusts and a lost downed trees. they re saying that was some of the hardest hit locations overnight. in charleston, they ve had about a foot of rain, and on top of that, they had like the third highest storm surmg over the city s history. there s a lot of water on the coast. we have yet to get reports from t
kind of a different category. numerous areas had wind gusts that would do significant damage anywhere else in the country, but eastern north carolina, you are storm tested. you get storms like this often. the structures are built better. that s why we re not hearing reports of a lot of damage. look at our storm, it s almost now parallel to ocean city, maryland. it still has a well-defined eye with it. it s starting to weaken slightly but you can clearly tell we have a hurricane just off the virginia coast this morning. right now winds are at 100, pressure at 976. it s racing to the northeast at 21 miles per hour. it was due east of virginia beach about an hour ago. now it looks like it s probably a little bit north-northeast of that location. and so here it is on radar and satellite. the great news for the north carolina region that got hit hard last night, we re returning to your beautiful carolina blue skies. we have quick clearing of the clouds and rain, and even our reporters out t
