One year ago, Gov. Mike DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted, along with other leaders, led the unveiling of the Cincinnati Innovation District. The University of Cincinnati was charged by state leadership with leveraging the tremendous innovation assets within close proximity to one another, including the university, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the federal EPA research center. The CID is designed to be a magnet for the type of talent that attracts Fortune 500, mid-size and developing startups and positioned to become a model for other heartland cities.
One week later, the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the nation. While Ohio started 2020 with record-high levels of employment and thriving industry, the state, and its people – like the rest of the nation – took a major economic hit as the virus raged across the country. In a year of significant challenges, the CID is proving to be the kind of economic engine to drive growth that our city and state needs ....
