The anthology includes “poems of outrage, essays of research and political outcries”, which were compiled in response to the ongoing activity at the National Library. Earlier this month the library announced it would donate about 600,000 of the books it planned to cull from its overseas collection to the Internet Archive, a digital library with the stated mission of universal access to all knowledge. Anita Durning is a long-time Timaru library member and is seen using the library s self-checkout system. The fear of being fined for an overdue book may soon be over, as the Timaru District Council explores ways of increasing library user numbers. A report to the council, prepared by Timaru Libraries manager Adele Hewlett says the proposal, which will go out for public comment in this year’s draft Long Term Plan, comes after several councils, including Central Hawke’s Bay, Rangitikei District, Selwyn, and Masterton, removed library overdue fines. “Nationally and internationally, this has been identified as a successful way of increasing library use and reducing access barriers, particularly to low income families. The benefit to the library system is clear, in terms of increased use,” Hewlett’s report says. ....
