MPA reports resilient construction demand during Q1 2021 for mineral products but warns of challenges ahead

UK construction’s demand for big-volume mineral products like aggregates and concrete showed resilience in the first quarter of 2021, despite renewed lockdown restrictions, Brexit and a particularly wet winter weather hampering activity.
That’s according to the latest survey from the Mineral Products Association (MPA) which warns that an encouraging start to the year should not distract from real challenges that lie ahead.
MPA says the recovery in construction must not be taken for granted because so much depends on the Government’s policy stimuli in housing and its delivery of the UK’s planned infrastructure programme. ONS data shows that construction output has flatlined since September, whilst new contract awards have been weak for most of the past year. ....

M60 crash caused by sudden snow flurry | This Is Lancashire


ELEVEN vehicles were involved in a pile up at J25 in Bredbury on the M60 on Saturday morning following a sudden snow flurry .
The road was closed anticlockwise from J25 in Bredbury to J24 at Denton Island while emergency services attended the incident.
Police have said that some of the occupants of the vehicles sustained minor injuries.
The crash happened at around 8am on Saturday morning, police said that the snow led to numerous collisions.
Highways England had advised people to avoid the area as traffic had to be stopped to deal with the incident.

Council bridges decline as scour checks fall
The number of substandard road bridges managed by councils across Great Britain is increasing, new research shows.
According to the latest survey by the RAC Foundation, local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales have identified 3,105 bridges - structures over 1.5m in span – as being substandard.
This was 1.6% up on the 3,055 figure twelve months before. Councils responding to the survey are responsible for maintaining 71,656 bridges, meaning that 4.3% of the inventory is substandard.
Substandard means unable to carry the heaviest vehicles now seen on British roads, including lorries of up to 44 tonnes. Many of the substandard bridges are subject to weight restrictions. Others will be under programmes of increased monitoring or even managed decline. ....
