Analysis: Tensions between Aoun and Berri bode ill for Lebanon


Damascus: Away from media attention, a new rivalry is brewing in Lebanon between President Michel Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. The two men, technically part of the same Hezbollah-led March 8 Coalition, are at odds over the promotion of army officers loyal to Aoun, which ought to have happened on January 1, 2021.
Shorty before the Christmas holidays, Lebanese Army Command prepared a list of officers earmarked for periodic promotion and sent it to the Ministry of Finance to fix their salary increase, as is customarily done. Finance Minister Ghazi Wazni, a protégé of the speaker of Parliament, signed off only on half of the salary increase requests, claiming that he wanted to equate between Muslim and Christian officers. ....

Accusations against Diab being seen as attack on Lebanon's Sunnis


Damascus: Lebanon’s caretaker premier Hassan Diab has been accused of “criminal negligence” in relation to his role in the August 4 explosion at Beirut port, which destroyed large parts of the Lebanese capital, killing over 200 people. Instead of ending Diab’s political career, the accusation seems to have had an opposite effect, breathing new life into it while prompting Lebanese Sunnis to rally around him, claiming that their positioning in the state is under attack.
Suddenly and seemingly overnight, Hassan Diab has become something of a symbol for Sunnis across the country, a position that he had relentless tried carving out for himself during his brief tenure as premier, with little luck. ....
