Broadcast center. Now at 11 00, an east bay teenager killed in a freak accident involving a tree. Im dan ashley. Im ama daetz. It happened next to childrens ferry land in oakland along the shores of lake merritt. Abc news alan wang is there to explain what happened. This is the long portion of the tree that snapped killing the boy around 6 00 that evening. It appears the tree had been weakened because the top of it either broke off or died some time in the past. It is something an arborist has to determine now that somebody has been killed here. It happened off the trail around lake merritt next to the ferry land sign. A witness says three teens were siting on this long branch when another 16yearold boy jumped up and grabbed on to the end of it. The witness tells me he gave the boy cpr, but he realized that there is no hope because it looked like the boys neck was badly broken.
