Dozens of employees at a Springfield memory care facility picketed Tuesday demanding improved working conditions and recognition of their union. Around 40 workers and family from The Rawlin at RiverBend Memory Care in Springfield were out front of the facility all day demanding higher wages, more staff, and better training. Employees said understaffing contributed to 23 deaths over the last nine weeks, with only six due to COVID-19. ....
Workers at a Springfield memory care facility who are seeking to unionize announced that they gave a 10-day strike notice after the management refused to recognize their union and request expedited contract negotiations. The employees at The Rawlin at Riverbend Memory Care first demanded immediate recognition of the union on Monday, Feb. 1, in response to an active COVID-19 outbreak among residents with 47 cases and six deaths. Employees then delivered a petition to the management detailing the danger facing workers and residents from understaffing, insufficient training and a low-wage induced high turnover rate. According to a press release sent by union SEIU 503 on Feb. 5, The Rawlin management refused to recognize the union and “take steps to protect residents.” Staff at The Rawlin then delivered pledges to go on strike. ....
The Rawlin at Riverbend Memory Care is owned by Onelife Investments. Workers say they are inadequately staffed and that residents suffer because of it. Summer Trosko is a med tech who has worked at the Rawlin for three years. “We’re short-staffed all the time,” said Trosko. “The training is really bad. New caregivers training new caregivers. Med techs training for one day and then they’re putting them on the floor.” Trosko said 21 residents have died in the past 8 weeks. Six from Covid-19. “And most of them have died alone.” Her colleague Hermes Ochoa said there’s just not enough staff to give adequate care. ....
