Ever dreamed of living in a bit of Milwaukee neighborhood history? Well, a Milwaukee building intended to power streetcars on the West Side is now for sale.
Back in 1999, Time Warner Cable was looking for new, larger digs and it was considering two spots: the former Gimbels building on Wisconsin Avenue and the hulking old red brick Commerce Street Power Plant. Fortunately, it choose the latter, potentially saving it.
The Wisconsin Historical Society recently announced that two Milwaukee buildings - the Underwriters Exchange Building, 828 N. Broadway, and the Milwaukee Protestant Home for the Aged, 2449 N. Downer Ave. - were added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 10.
