Our Correspondent Kohima, Aug. 31 (EMN): The Nagaland Pradesh Youth Congress (NPYC) on Wednesday demanded the government of Nagaland to immediately set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the ‘custodial death’ of Henveih Phom and ensure justice for the victim. In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister of Nagaland, a copy of which was made available to the media, the NPYC stated that Phom’s alleged ‘custodial death’ on August 21 at a district jail in Sivasagar after being arrested by the Assam Police on August 16 was “disturbing”. Stating that the incident had triggered a hue and cry in the state, particularly in the eastern Nagaland area where a mass protest rally demanding justice for the victim was held, the youth Congress questioned “the silence and indifferent attitude of the Government of Nagaland” for the last 10 days since the incident took place. Dimapur, Aug. 26 (EMN): A peaceful public rally was held at Longleng public ground on Friday to protest the death of Henveih Phom, who allegedly died while in Assam police’s custody on August 21. The participants marched from the local ground to Longleng Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum addressed to the state Chief Secretary, according to an update. President of Phom Peoples’ Council (PPC), Shami Angh urged Longleng DC Dhram Raj to deliver the message to the chief secretary to serve justice within 15 days, failing which the people would be compelled to “confront with violence” directed by the Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation (ENSF). Extending solidarity to the people of the district, the DC said that death under police custody is the “highest crime” and assured the protestors to deliver justice, while urging them to appeal before the National Human Rights Commission of India.
