Another lockdown in Victoria has been driven by the lack of federal initiative in developing dedicated, design-built facilities for people from overseas requiring quarantine (“NSW on alert as Victoria flares up”, May 28). The need for NSW to be on high alert once again is an overflow from the increase in Victoria’s cases, which was imported from a South Australian person becoming infected in a hotel with inadequate ventilation systems to deal with the spread of this infection. The states have repeatedly asked the federal government for purpose-built quarantine facilities, beyond Howard Springs, but to no avail. The feds just shift the onus back to the states in a never-ending blame game.

It seems that Shane Wright has been drinking the Kool-Aid left behind by Mathias âdebt and deficit disasterâ Cormann (âAn ocean of debtâ, May 15-16). The economy has not âbounced backâ after COVID-19, as some suggest. Rather, it has been dragged into better shape by massive government spending â but it is still far from healthy. Even the current Treasurer has acknowledged that âthe best way to fix the budget is to fix the economyâ. Full employment and price stability must always be our goals. Budget surpluses or deficits are simply a record of whether the private sector or the government has had to do the heavy lifting. -

Your editorial claims the government is right to balance the interests of rural producers and the environment (“Koalas must not pay the price for political peace”, March 10).
What nonsense; there are way too many farmers. The country produces three times the amount of food we need at the expense of waterways and native species. Prioritise the environment. If the excess farmers won’t get off the land, nationalise them.
