Hundreds marched in Henderson on Saturday to oppose the Henderson Streets for People trial. Because of “potential safety and compliance concerns”, Panuku’s Auckland priority location director John Carter said the original road layout would be reinstated along Railside Ave near Great North Rd. The left turn lane from Great North Rd onto Henderson Valley Rd would also be put back to normal.

A mural that was recently painted on the toilet block was seriously damaged. “The male toilets are already reopened, and council is working as quickly as possible to reopen the female toilets.” On social media, the Henderson-Massey Local Board said it was “pretty gutted” about the fire. “They had just had a fantastic mural painted on them which has been destroyed.” Police said a witness told officers that kids were seen running from the scene following the fire.

Auckland Council said part of the toilet block had been set on fire. A spokesman said police attended the incident and took photos of the damage, reporting the fire as suspicious.
