injuries. but what happened to one lance corporal made my jaw drop. how does anyone survive having a rocket-propelled grenade being shot into their body? here s correspondent barbara starr. reporter: marine corporal perez know the rocket-propelled grenade was coming right at him. all of a sudden, just, i just saw the rpg coming towards me, and it hit me, and you know, i was hit and my boys, they knew exactly what to do and they came down, no hesitation, no nothing, and they picked me up, got me to safety. reporter: winder perez had a live, foot-long, rocket-propelled grenade embedded in his left side, but even so, he kept his cool. i tried to call in my own medivac, but u couldn t because my radio, the rpg had struck the battery in my radio. reporter: plain words from this baseball-loving 23-year-old native of the dominican republic. perez and his fellow marines knew the rpg could explode at any minute, but they also knew he needed medical help as soon as poss ....

a cutter has made its way to the yacht and at least two of the injured have been moved to a smaller ship. i want to go now by telephone to coast guard petty officer caleb critchfield. sir, thank you very much. were you able to get help out? yes, we were. the coast guard cutter is on scene. they deployed their small response boat to go out to the yacht, and we were able to recover two of the injured people and get them on board the small boat. okay. so they are on scene right now as you and i are speaking rescuing these people, correct? yes. okay. the entire crew won t be taken off at first. you said only the injured. there are three injured. you are getting two off first. are we to assume these are the people more seriously injured? yes. i think it would be safe to assume that. i m not sure what the plan is. i think that they are trying to get the two people off the small boat on to the helo and will be flying back to the san francisco airport where the coast ....

sergeant. his children were so glad to see him just a few months ago. hello, everyone. it s the top of the hour. i m don lemon. thank you for joining us. we re going to begin tonight with the rescue of an international yacht racing team hundreds of miles off the california coast. the crew is competing in the clipper around the world race. it s like the tv show survivor except on the high seas. everyday people, cab drivers, teachers, bankers, compete against other teams circling the globe. and they chronicle their journey, as this video shows. now in the final leg of the 4500-mile race, they hit a monster wave and took out the communications equipment and injured three of its group, including these two members. now the coast guard has a cutter close enough to launch a helicopter. they re about 40 miles off the coast of sapphire but tn franci weather is getting in the way here. joining me on the phone is petty officer caleb critchfield. thank you for joining me. has t ....
