New Digital Map Gives Fresh Details About The Ancient City Of Pergamon


Pergamon: One Of The Best-preserved Ancient World Cities
One of the best-preserved cities of the ancient world, Pergamon sits near modern-day Turkey s west coast next to the city known as Bergama. Pergamon was a prosperous, cosmopolitan city that flourished in antiquity starting with King Lysimachus who ruled from 301 – 281 BC. It became the capital of the kingdom of Pergamon after the fall of the Lysimachian Empire. Then, the Attalid dynasty ruled Pergamon from 281 – 133 BC. It remained a Hellenistic territory until 133, when the city was bequeathed to Rome because Attalus III died without an heir.
The city continued to grow and develop well into the Byzantine era, but the digitalized map recently released focuses on the 3rd century BC, which was the Hellenistic period . Four Water Cisterns Found At The Ancient City Of Metropolis


This year represents the 30th year of excavations at Metropolis and Dr. Serdar Aybek
, head of the department of archaeology at Turkey’s Manisa Celal Bayar University, told
Hurriyet Daily News that a team of researchers had unearthed four monumental interconnected subterranean structures .
The four water cisterns were found under the acropolis, the highest part of the city, beneath a seven-meter (23-foot) earth fill dating to the Late Roman period, roughly 1,500 years ago. An article in
Archaeology News Network says the people of Metropolis built these cisterns during the Byzantine period as an additional water source to the water resources found in the lower parts of the city. ....
