Charlie Pride, country music s first African-American superstar, died from complications due to COVID-19 on Saturday, according to a statement on his website. He was 86.
Pride had 52 recordings in the top 10 of
Billboard s country charts, including Is Anyone Goin to San Antone, Kiss An Angel Good Mornin , and Roll on Mississippi. His first hit was Just You And Me in 1967, after which came two decades of nonstop success. He won three Grammy awards (and a fourth for lifetime achievement in 2017), and the 1971 Entertainer of the Year award from the Country Music Association. His induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000 was the first for a Black performer. ....

In the early 1960s, a young minor league baseball pitcher and aspiring country singer named Charley Pride had settled into a discouraging routine. His days were spent toiling in Helena, Mont., at a smelter operated by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., and he spent his free time playing for its semipro baseball team, the East Helena Smelterites.
He stood out as an African American working in a musical genre that seldom welcomed Black voices. But he developed a small but enthusiastic fan base singing in Montana honky tonks, which in 1962 led to his invitation to perform before a show headlined by country singers Red Sovine and Red Foley. ....

Charley Pride, who played baseball for the Missoula Timberjacks and the East Helena Smelterites in the 1960s before becoming the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, has died at age 86. 
Pride died Saturday in Dallas of complications from COVID-19, according to Jeremy Westby of the public relations firm 2911 Media.
Pride released dozens of albums and sold more than 25 million records during a career that began in the mid-1960s. Hits besides “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” in 1971 included “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” “Burgers and Fries,” “Mountain of Love,” and “Someone Loves You Honey.” ....
