Credit: Tim Graham/Getty Images Remote working has a whole other meaning for those passionate individuals still farming crofts in the Highlands. Joe Gibbs takes a look and discovers crofting to be alive and well though still as tough a life as it ever was. The tiny west Highland township of Elphin, north of Ullapool, stands out from the moorland landscape as a patchwork of bright green. Its rare fertility derives from a seam of limestone beneath the soil. Rank heath surrounds it as far as the eye can see and beyond that lie slabs of Lewisian gneiss, the oldest rocks in Europe, three billion years old. Home to about 60 souls, many of them crofting families, Elphin straddles the A835, until recently a road unremarkable for much other than the lonely beauty of the hills either side and the fish lorries from Loc ....

Helen O Keefe HELEN O’Keefe, from Elphin, Sutherland, has been chosen as the Scottish Crofting Federation s Young Crofter of the Year. Chair of the SCF, Donald MacKinnon, said: “We got an extremely high calibre of entrants for this round of the SCF Young Crofter Award, which is generously supported by The MacRobert Trust. It is an inspiration to see young folk doing such a very wide variety of activities on their crofts and they all fully deserve to be recognised for their efforts and enterprises. The judges, representatives of SCF, The MacRobert Trust and the Crofting Commission, certainly found what they were looking for – inspiration, enterprise, commitment and community involvement, in abundance. From the wide range of nominations, all very worthy ambassadors for crofting, we narrowed it down to a shortlist – Adam Veitch from Banavie, Cheryl McIntyre from Skye and Helen O’Keefe from Elphin. But of course there can only be one winner and Helen seems ....

Ms O’Keefe runs a 100-ewe flock of Shetlands alongside running the Elphin Tea Rooms, where she sells produce from her croft, and serving as the grazings clerk for her local township. ....
