The Galesburg Public Library now has all the funding needed to complete its new building project. It's taken 15 years of work, community support, and generous donations but the last of the nearly $20 million has been raised for the building that's expected to open in early 2024. The bulk of the funding, $15.3 million came from a State of Illinois grant, covering 75 percent of construction costs. The grant was submitted in 2013 and will require several years of follow-up actions in accordance with the grant's rules. The remaining dollars have all been raised locally, including over $1 million unlocked by a 2:1 matching grant through the Galesburg Community Foundation. With a 2:1 matching grant from the Galesburg Community Foundation, the new library raised over a million dollars towards a new community room. The Foundation's matching grant challenge incentivizes individual donors to give to the library campaign. For every $2.00 donated, the foundation matched with an additional dollar, up to $350,000. "The Foundation match grant engaged the whole community to make the new library a reality," said Galesburg Public Library Director Noelle Thompson. "The Galesburg Public Library belongs to the entire Galesburg community. It was essential that all members of our community have the opportunity to participate in this project." By the campaign's end on September 30, more than $700,000 was donated through the challenge, unlocking the maximum match amount and a total gift of over $1,000,050 for the library. The Community Room will serve as a multi-purpose space for the public. "We wanted to give the library a tool that woul ....
