frederick pleitgen, what are you seeing today? reporter: john, russian military equipment moving to the frontline to kharkiv. some heavy vehicles moving in there and then also multiple rocket launchers as well. but i would say the big difference we ve seen here from our vantage point from the russian side, and it meshes with the fact the fighting is growing more intense in kharkiv and more heavy strikes, a lot of really heavy rocket artillery fire coming from around here. in fact, i was hearing thuds and also russian warplanes have been in the air a lot over us the course of the day. we do know there have been several major impacts in kharkiv, an administration building hit, police headquarters hit as well, and the university building getting hit also today. a lot of heavy fighting. it seems as though right now as far as the conflict is concerned, as far as the russian invasion is concerned, that kharkiv seems to be one of their
in action. we have been hearing some sounds behind you, fred. i wonder if you can describe. i know at times you ve seen rocket fire over your head, planes as well. what are you hearing right now? reporter: well, right now what we re hearing is sort of jets circling overhead. we have been hearing that the entire time, almost we have been here, here for about four or five hours i would say. there has been pretty much constant jet activity going on by the russian air force. and, again, right now it slowed down a little bit, but even as we were on air, we have been hearing thuds in the background of what could either be artillery or rocket artillery, very difficult to tell on a day like this because of the overcast, because of the weather. but it is something that certainly is a constant. one other thing i wanted to mention to you, jim, as well, we are also still seeing a lot of resupply convoys going behind me towards the area of kharkiv as well. so it certainly does seem like the russi
deescalation on the part of the russians. just as we re going to air right now, once again we re hearing multiple rocket launching systems going off in the distance. also hearing thuds as well. that s something we have had throughout the entire day. it is indeed the case that a lot of that fighting is taking place especially towards the northwest of kyiv in some of the suburbs there. that s also the area from where the russians wanted to push into the capital but were confronted by ukrainian troops and unleashed that fire storm of indirect fire of artillery, which is really hitting the suburbs there. and the one suburb, jake, that we keep talking about the most is the suburb of irpin and today, i got as close as possible to that place and saw some really heavy fighting. we have to warn our viewers that some of what they re about to see is very graphic. through heavily fortified checkpoints, we reached the edge of kyiv at the suburb, irpin. suddenly on top of the artillery barrages, hea
