Let me begin by thanking our panelists and members of at todays briefing. 40,000, the latest estimate of how Many Americans in Nursing Homes and other longterm care facilities have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The men and women who died at these Nursing Homes were parents and grandparents, who sacrificed to provide for their families. Some were veterans who fought to protect our country. Many were essential workers who kept showing up to care for the elderly and the sick, even when it meant risking their own lives as our nation faced more deaths from coronavirus than any other country. Lets be clear. These 40,000 americans deserve better. Their deaths in our nation to protect our people. There were warnings. In february the coronavirus attacked the Life Care Center in kirkland, washington. Three quarters of the residents at that facility became infected, along with dozens of staff. 37 people died. With two california universities that aims to streamline and speed up the testing process. We specifically have a new partnership with uc davis, and uc san diego to create a minimum of 57 hubs where we have high input, where we will work with different vendors, not be prescriptive on the exact type of testing. But working with these hubs to significantly increase our Testing Capacity and our collaborative spirit. Within those hubs. California is nearing 13,000 cases and 288 deaths in the bay area. There are more than 3000 cases and 87 deaths. The majority in santa clara, and more than 1000 or with more than 1000 deaths in that county as well.
