Financials, industrials boost Sri Lanka stocks

May 12 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan shares closed higher for a second consecutive day on Wednesday, helped by gains in financials, industrials and consumer staples stocks.
The CSE All-Share Index rose 0.26% to end at 7,161.77. It has climbed 5.72% this year.
Conglomerate John Keells Holding and food retailer Cargills (Ceylon) Plc were among the top boosts to the index, gaining 1.30% and 3.77%, respectively.
Separately, Sri Lanka, which is battling a third wave of the coronavirus infections, said it had imposed an island-wide total lockdown from Thursday night to Monday morning.
Sri Lanka is now reporting more than 1,900 new infections each day. The South Asian island nation last month had imposed curbs on public gatherings. ....

NEW DELHI, April 25 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged all citizens to be vaccinated and exercise caution, saying on Sunday the “storm” of infections had shaken India, as the country set a new global record of the most number of COVID-19 infections in a day.
The United States said it will immediately provide raw materials for one of the COVID-19 vaccines, medical equipment and protective gear to help India respond. France, Britain and Germany also promised rapid support.
The number of cases in India surged by 349,691 in the past 24 hours, the fourth straight day of record peaks. Hospitals in Delhi and across the country are turning away patients after running out of medical oxygen and beds. ....

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India set a new global record of the most number of coronavirus infections in a day, as the United States said it was racing to send help to the country.

India’s number of cases surged by 349,691 in the past 24 hours, the fourth straight day of record peaks, and hospitals in Delhi and across the country are turning away patients after running out of medical oxygen and beds.
“Our hearts go out to the Indian people in the midst of the horrific COVID-19 outbreak. We are working closely with our partners in the Indian government, and we will rapidly deploy additional support to the people of India and India’s health care heroes,” U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on twitter. ....
